Young Scholars

Hoosic Valley is very happy to have a Young Scholars program return to the Elementary School.  Young Scholars class is an opportunity for like-minded students to come together in a different format that allows for academic enrichment. The classes meet once a week for 2 hours at a time. Fifth and sixth grade combine in the morning and third and fourth in the afternoon. The class is led by Rosemary Christle-Renaud, a teacher from WSWHE Boces.

Our young scholars have worked on many topics including: Nanotechnology, Energy, Poetry, Habits of Mind, and more. Their main focus as of late is “Genius Hour”. During an hour each week the students spend time researching and developing a project of their choice, which they then present to the class. Some of the projects ideas are Climate Change, Vegan and Vegetarian Recipes, (we actually got to try the food) World War II, Tanks, Writing a song notes and lyrics and then preforming it, Tallest Building, Taxonomy.

There is still much to learn this year. Students are going to discover all about snow and then plan a dream snow day. Research Tiny Homes and then design one, right down to the furniture. A main goal of this program is to include Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math into everything students do.

Students qualified for the class by taking an academic achievement test. Students also must be independent and responsible for making up their missed class work while attending young scholars.  All in all it’s a great program that expands the education provided by the Hoosic Valley School District.
