First Grade was visited recently by a nature expert that brought the Pine Bush to their classroom. This program educates students on the importance and habit of the Albany Pine Bush Preserve and then gives the students a chance to help restore the habit of the Karner Blue Butterfly.
Our students rolled their sleeves up and got busy planting their blue lupine seeds with the help of our visiting nature expert. The students will continue to nurture their seedlings throughout the spring. When the plants are big enough, they will go on a field trip to the Pine Bush and replant their seedling helping to maintain the habit of the endangered Karner Blue. While this butterfly will eat the nectar from many types of wildflowers, helping with pollination, they will only lay their eggs on the Wild Blue Lupine. Hence the importance of the Blue Lupine - we thank our first graders for helping to protect this amazing endangered species and their efforts to replenish our local habitats.
